Regal Angelfish –
The Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) is one of the most beautiful marine fish available to aquarists, admired for its vivid orange and yellow body, striking blue accents and distinctive white vertical bands edged in dark blue. Its elegant appearance and graceful swimming make it a highly sought-after addition to large marine aquariums.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, the Regal Angelfish inhabits coral-rich reefs, lagoons and rocky areas with plenty of caves and crevices. It naturally feeds on sponges, tunicates and other small organisms, so its specialist dietary requirements make it a challenging species best suited to experienced marine aquarists.
Growing to approximately 25 cm, the Regal Angelfish needs a large, mature aquarium with excellent water quality, plenty of established live rock and numerous hiding places. An aquarium of at least 600 litres is a useful starting point, with larger systems strongly recommended. Calm tankmates and a settled environment can help this naturally shy fish acclimatise successfully.
Feeding is one of the most important aspects of its care. Offer specialist sponge-based angelfish foods alongside enriched frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood and suitable marine algae. Several small meals each day can help maintain its condition. Before purchase, ensure the fish is healthy and feeding confidently.
The Regal Angelfish is not reliably reef safe. Although some individuals coexist with selected corals, others may nip at soft corals, large-polyp stony corals, clams and other sessile invertebrates. A carefully planned aquarium and close observation are essential.
With its spectacular colours and distinctive character, the Regal Angelfish can be a rewarding centrepiece for a mature marine aquarium. However, its specialist diet and sensitivity mean it should only be kept by aquarists prepared to meet its demanding care requirements.
