Regal Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus)

The Regal Tang is one of the most recognisable and colourful marine aquarium fish, famous for its vibrant royal-blue body, bold black markings and bright yellow tail. Also known as the Blue Tang, Hippo Tang, Palette Surgeonfish and Dory, this beautiful species is a popular choice for marine enthusiasts looking to add colour and activity to a large aquarium.

Regal Tang Care Requirements

Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Regal Tang is an active swimmer that needs a spacious, mature marine aquarium with excellent filtration, strong water circulation and plenty of open swimming space. Provide live rock with caves and hiding places where the fish can retreat when startled.

An aquarium of at least 600–700 litres is recommended as a starting point, with a larger tank preferred for adult specimens, which can reach approximately 30 cm in length.

Maintain stable water conditions, with a temperature of 24–27°C, a salinity of 1.023–1.025 specific gravity and a pH of 8.1–8.4. Regal Tangs can be sensitive to stress and are susceptible to marine white spot, making quarantine and good water quality particularly important.

Feeding Your Regal Tang

Regal Tangs are omnivorous, feeding naturally on zooplankton and algae. Offer a varied diet of quality frozen marine foods, including mysis shrimp and enriched brine shrimp, alongside nori seaweed, spirulina and suitable marine pellets. Regular feeding helps maintain good health, colouration and body condition.

Compatibility and Reef Suitability

Regal Tangs are generally peaceful with compatible tank mates and are considered reef safe, making them suitable for many coral aquariums. However, they may become territorial towards other tangs, particularly in confined spaces.

Add a Regal Tang to Your Aquarium

With its brilliant blue colouration, distinctive markings and lively swimming behaviour, the Regal Tang makes an impressive addition to a spacious marine aquarium. Provide a balanced diet, excellent water quality and plenty of swimming room to help this beautiful fish thrive.
