Lawnmower Algae Blenny (Salarias fasciatus)
The Lawnmower Algae Blenny is a popular marine aquarium fish, loved for its amusing personality, unusual appearance and natural algae-grazing habits. With its mottled brown and cream body, distinctive markings and expressive eyes, this characterful fish makes an excellent addition to suitable established marine and reef aquariums.
Lawnmower Algae Blenny Care Requirements
The Lawnmower Blenny originates from the Indo-Pacific region, where it inhabits shallow reefs and rocky coastal environments. In the aquarium, it benefits from plenty of live rock, mature surfaces and natural algae growth to graze throughout the day.
An aquarium of around 200 litres or larger is recommended, particularly where plenty of grazing space is required. Maintain stable water conditions, with a temperature of approximately 24–28°C, a salinity of 1.023–1.026 specific gravity and a pH between 8.1 and 8.4.
Provide plenty of hiding places and secure rockwork to create a comfortable environment. Although generally peaceful, Lawnmower Blennies may become territorial towards similar-looking fish or other blennies.
Feeding Your Lawnmower Algae Blenny
As a natural algae grazer, this blenny spends much of its time picking at algae growing on rocks and aquarium surfaces. However, natural algae alone may not provide enough nutrition, especially in newer or very clean aquariums.
Supplement its diet with nori seaweed, spirulina-based foods, algae wafers and suitable marine herbivore preparations. Monitor its body condition regularly to ensure it is eating enough.
Reef Compatibility
The Lawnmower Algae Blenny is generally considered reef compatible and will usually leave corals and invertebrates alone. Its grazing behaviour can help manage certain types of nuisance algae, although it should not be relied upon as a complete algae-control solution.
Add a Lawnmower Algae Blenny to Your Aquarium
With its entertaining behaviour, distinctive appearance and useful grazing habits, the Lawnmower Algae Blenny is a rewarding choice for established marine aquariums. Provide mature live rock, a suitable supplementary diet and excellent water quality to help your fish remain healthy and active.
