Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus)

The Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus) is a spectacular marine aquarium fish, instantly recognisable by its bright yellow body, white face and distinctive black facial markings. Also known as the Fox Face or Common Foxface, this popular species combines striking colouration with useful algae-grazing behaviour, making it a favourite among marine aquarium enthusiasts.

Foxface Rabbitfish Care Requirements

Native to the Western Pacific, the Foxface Rabbitfish is an active swimmer that needs a spacious, established marine aquarium with excellent filtration, plenty of live rock and open swimming areas. A tank of at least 350–400 litres is a sensible starting point, with a larger aquarium preferred for long-term care.

Maintain stable water conditions, with a temperature of approximately 24–27°C, a salinity of 1.023–1.026 specific gravity and a pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Provide sheltered areas where the fish can retreat when startled.

Feeding Your Foxface Rabbitfish

Foxfaces are primarily herbivorous grazers that feed on algae throughout the day. Offer a varied diet including marine algae sheets, nori, spirulina-based foods and high-quality herbivore pellets. Supplement with occasional suitable frozen marine foods for variety.

Regular feeding helps maintain good health and can reduce the likelihood of the fish nipping at corals when hungry. Foxfaces are also valued for grazing on certain nuisance algae, although results will vary.

Compatibility and Reef Suitability

The Foxface Rabbitfish is generally peaceful towards compatible tank mates and can be kept in a reef aquarium with caution. Some individuals may nip at soft corals, fleshy LPS corals or other polyps, so monitor behaviour carefully.

An important consideration is its venomous fin spines, which can cause a painful sting. Handle with extreme care and avoid direct contact when carrying out aquarium maintenance.

Add a Foxface Rabbitfish to Your Aquarium

With its vivid yellow colour, distinctive markings and useful grazing habits, the Foxface Rabbitfish makes an impressive centrepiece for a spacious marine aquarium. Provide a balanced algae-rich diet, excellent water quality and plenty of swimming space to help this remarkable fish thrive.
