Percula Clownfish –

The Percula Clownfish (Amphiprion percula) is one of the most recognisable and popular marine aquarium fish, admired for its vibrant orange body, three distinctive white bands and bold black edging. Its colourful appearance and engaging personality make it a fantastic addition to both beginner and experienced marine aquariums.

Native to the Western Pacific, including the Great Barrier Reef and surrounding Indo-Pacific waters, the Percula Clownfish naturally lives among coral reefs, often forming a close relationship with sea anemones. This fascinating behaviour makes it a favourite among reef enthusiasts, although an anemone is not essential for keeping this species successfully in captivity.

The Percula Clownfish is relatively hardy and adapts well to aquarium life, particularly when captive-bred. It generally reaches around 8–11 cm in length and can be kept in a suitable marine aquarium with stable water conditions, good filtration and plenty of shelter. A tank of around 75–100 litres is a useful starting point for a compatible pair, with a larger aquarium recommended for mixed community setups.

This species is omnivorous and benefits from a varied, balanced diet. Offer quality marine pellets and flakes alongside frozen foods such as mysis shrimp and enriched brine shrimp. Occasional suitable algae-based foods can provide additional variety and support good health.

Percula Clownfish are generally reef safe and can live alongside many corals and marine invertebrates. However, they may become territorial when paired or when protecting a preferred hiding place or host anemone. They are best kept singly or as a compatible pair, with tank mates selected carefully.

With its vivid colours, fascinating behaviour and manageable care requirements, the Percula Clownfish is an excellent choice for creating a lively and attractive marine aquarium. Given good water quality, suitable nutrition and a secure environment, it can thrive for many years.
