Green Chromis (Chromis viridis)
The Green Chromis (Chromis viridis), also known as the Blue-Green Chromis, is a popular marine aquarium fish admired for its shimmering turquoise-green colouration, peaceful temperament and lively swimming behaviour. Its iridescent scales reflect shades of green and blue under aquarium lighting, creating a beautiful display in reef and marine community aquariums.
Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific, Green Chromis are commonly found swimming in groups around coral reefs and lagoons, often sheltering among branching corals. In the home aquarium, they bring natural movement to the open water above live rock and coral structures. Their active, shoaling behaviour makes them particularly attractive when kept in a suitable group.
Green Chromis are generally considered a good choice for beginner and experienced marine aquarists alike. They are relatively hardy once acclimatised and can coexist with a wide range of peaceful reef fish. They are also considered reef-safe, making them suitable for aquariums containing corals and most ornamental invertebrates.
Green Chromis are omnivorous and readily accept a varied diet. Offer quality marine flakes or small pellets alongside frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp and other suitable plankton-based preparations. Feeding small portions regularly helps support their active lifestyle while maintaining good body condition.
With its dazzling blue-green colour, sociable nature and constant movement, the Green Chromis is an excellent choice for adding a lively shoal of colour to a well-maintained marine or reef aquarium.
