Blue Cheek Goby (Valenciennea strigata)

The Blue Cheek Goby is a beautiful and useful marine aquarium fish, recognised by its bright yellow head, striking blue facial markings and pale body. Also known as the Golden-Head Sleeper Goby or Blueband Goby, this fascinating species is popular with marine aquarists for its peaceful temperament and natural sand-sifting behaviour.

Blue Cheek Goby Care Requirements

Blue Cheek Gobies need a mature marine aquarium with a suitable bed of fine sand for burrowing and natural feeding. An aquarium of at least 200 litres is a sensible starting point, with a larger footprint preferred to provide plenty of space for swimming and digging.

Maintain stable water conditions, with a temperature of approximately 24–26°C, a salinity of 1.020–1.025 specific gravity and a pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Provide secure rock work, sheltered areas and a tight-fitting aquarium lid to help prevent jumping.

Feeding Your Blue Cheek Goby

This species naturally sifts mouthfuls of sand to find small invertebrates and other food organisms. However, it should not rely on the sand bed alone for nutrition. Offer a varied diet of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp and other suitable meaty marine foods. Sinking marine pellets may also be accepted.

Feed regularly and monitor its body condition, as some individuals can struggle to obtain enough food in captivity.

Compatibility and Behaviour

Blue Cheek Gobies are generally peaceful and suitable for many community marine and reef aquariums. They can coexist with compatible fish and are generally safe around corals. However, they may become territorial towards similar bottom-dwelling gobies.

Their digging can disturb sand and undermine unsecured rock work, so ensure all rocks are firmly supported before adding this species.
