Blueface Angelfish –
The Blueface Angelfish (Pomacanthus xanthometopon) is a spectacular large marine angelfish admired for its vivid blue face, bright yellow markings and beautifully patterned body. Also known as the Yellowface or Yellowmask Angelfish, this impressive species develops increasingly striking colours as it matures, making it a stunning centrepiece for a large marine aquarium.
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Blueface Angelfish inhabits coral-rich lagoons, reef slopes and rocky areas where it searches for food among reef structures. Juveniles display a very different appearance, with dark blue bodies marked by curved white and pale blue bands. As they mature, they develop the distinctive adult colouring that makes this species so sought after by experienced marine aquarists.
Growing to approximately 38–45 cm, the Blueface Angelfish requires a very large, mature aquarium with plenty of open swimming space, caves and substantial live rock. A system of at least 700 litres is a starting point, with larger aquariums strongly recommended for adult specimens. Excellent filtration, strong oxygenation and stable water parameters are essential.
This species is an omnivore with specialised dietary needs. Offer a varied diet containing sponge-based angelfish preparations, marine algae, spirulina, quality marine pellets and suitable frozen foods such as mysis shrimp. Feeding several smaller meals throughout the day can help maintain good condition.
The Blueface Angelfish is semi-aggressive and may become territorial, particularly towards other angelfish. It is not reliably reef safe, as it may nip at corals, sponges, clam mantles and other sessile invertebrates. A large fish-only aquarium is generally the best environment for this species.
With its remarkable colours and commanding presence, the Blueface Angelfish is a rewarding choice for experienced aquarists who can provide the space, diet and care it needs.
