Yellow Eye Kole / Bristletooth Tang
The Yellow Eye Kole Tang, also known as the Bristletooth Tang or Goldring Bristletooth, is an attractive and useful addition to a mature marine aquarium. Recognised by its distinctive golden-yellow ring around each eye, fine blue markings and rich brown to olive body, this active fish brings both character and natural grazing behaviour to a reef display.
Native to the Pacific Ocean, the Yellow Eye Kole Tang spends much of its day browsing over live rock and other surfaces. Its specialised bristle-like teeth help it collect microalgae, diatoms and organic detritus, making it a valuable grazer in a well-established aquarium. Although it can help manage certain types of film algae, it should not be relied upon as a replacement for good aquarium maintenance.
The Kole Tang is generally considered reef safe and is usually compatible with corals and most invertebrates when properly fed. It is best kept in a spacious marine aquarium with plenty of open swimming room, mature live rock and hiding places where it can retreat when unsettled. A tank of around 500 litres or larger is a sensible target for long-term care.
Its diet should include a variety of marine algae, dried seaweed such as nori, spirulina-based foods and quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Occasional suitable frozen marine foods can provide variety. Regular feeding helps maintain its condition and encourages natural grazing behaviour.
Although often peaceful with a range of community fish, the Yellow Eye Kole Tang may become territorial towards other tangs, particularly similar-looking species. Choose tankmates carefully and introduce new fish thoughtfully. Like all tangs, it has sharp spines near the base of its tail, so handle with care.
With stable water quality, a balanced diet and enough space to swim and graze, the Yellow Eye Kole Tang can become a striking and rewarding long-term resident of a thriving reef aquarium
