Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish
The Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus) is a striking marine fish, recognised for its rich maroon-red body and three distinctive golden-yellow vertical stripes. This beautiful variety of maroon clownfish makes an eye-catching addition to a well-established saltwater aquarium, bringing vibrant colour and plenty of personality to a marine display.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Maroon Clownfish is closely associated with sea anemones in its natural reef habitat. In a home aquarium, it may form a bond with a suitable host anemone, such as a Bubble Tip Anemone, although an anemone is not essential for successful care. Providing stable water conditions, suitable rockwork and a secure environment will help your fish settle in comfortably.
Unlike smaller, more commonly kept clownfish species, the Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish can grow to around 15 cm, with females typically becoming considerably larger than males. It is also known for its bold and territorial behaviour, particularly as it matures. For this reason, careful consideration should be given to aquarium size and tankmate compatibility. It is generally best kept singly or as a carefully established pair, and should not normally be mixed with other clownfish species.
The Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish is omnivorous and benefits from a varied diet. Feed quality marine pellets or flakes alongside frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp and finely chopped marine seafood. Regular feeding with a balanced diet helps maintain its condition, growth and vibrant colouration.
This species is generally considered reef-safe with corals and most ornamental invertebrates. However, its territorial nature means it may vigorously defend its chosen area, especially around a host anemone. Provide enough space for other inhabitants to avoid conflict, and choose tankmates carefully.
With its brilliant gold markings, deep maroon colour and engaging behaviour, the Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a distinctive clownfish and able to accommodate its assertive temperament.
