Trochus Snail – Effective and Attractive Algae Cleaner for Marine Aquariums
The Trochus Snail (Trochus spp.) is a popular marine snail known for its excellent algae-eating abilities and durable, attractive shell. Its conical shape and often brightly patterned shell make it a visually appealing addition to reef tanks, while its natural grazing habits help control nuisance algae such as film algae, cyanobacteria, and hair algae.
Trochus Snails are hardy and adaptable, thriving in most saltwater aquariums. They actively move around the tank, cleaning rocks, glass, and substrate surfaces without harming corals or other invertebrates. Unlike some other snails, Trochus Snails rarely fall prey to fish, thanks to their tightly sealed operculum (trapdoor) which protects them from predators.
These snails also contribute to substrate aeration by burrowing slightly into the sand, helping maintain a healthy tank environment. They reproduce slowly, so overpopulation is typically not an issue.
