Tiger Goby (Valenciennea wardii)
The Tiger Goby (Valenciennea wardii), also known as Ward’s Sleeper Goby or the Tiger Sleeper Goby, is an attractive marine fish recognised for its pale body, distinctive dark vertical stripes and characteristic markings around the head and dorsal fin. Its unusual appearance and fascinating sand-sifting behaviour make it an interesting addition to a suitable marine or reef aquarium.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Tiger Goby is typically found in sandy lagoons, sheltered coastal bays and reef flats. In the aquarium, it spends much of its day sifting through the substrate, taking mouthfuls of sand and filtering out small crustaceans, worms and other edible organisms. This natural behaviour can help turn over and aerate the sand bed, although it should not be relied upon as a substitute for regular aquarium maintenance.
A mature aquarium with a generous area of fine sand is essential for this species. The Tiger Goby uses the substrate to feed and construct a secure burrow beneath or alongside stable rockwork. Rocks should be firmly supported on the aquarium base rather than resting loosely on sand, as digging may undermine them. A tightly fitting lid is also important because this species can jump when startled.
The Tiger Goby is carnivorous and needs regular feeding to maintain good body condition. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped marine seafood and suitable sinking carnivore pellets. Although it gathers natural food from the sand, this may not provide enough nutrition in captivity, so observe feeding carefully and supplement frequently.
Generally peaceful and compatible with corals, the Tiger Goby suits many reef aquariums with calm tankmates. However, it may defend its burrow against other sand-sifting gobies, and its digging can scatter sand over low-positioned corals. It is best kept singly or as a compatible pair, with enough floor space for natural foraging.
With its bold markings and active bottom-dwelling behaviour, the Tiger Goby is a rewarding choice for aquarists able to provide a mature sand bed, regular feeding and a secure aquarium environment.
