Tailspot Blenny (Ecsenius stigmatura)
The Tailspot Blenny (Ecsenius stigmatura) is a small, colourful and entertaining marine fish that makes an excellent addition to many established saltwater and reef aquariums. Recognised by its distinctive dark spot at the base of its tail and attractive yellow and blue facial markings, this little blenny has a curious personality that makes it a favourite among marine aquarium enthusiasts.
Growing to approximately 6cm, the Tailspot Blenny is well suited to smaller reef aquariums when provided with stable water conditions, plenty of live rock and suitable hiding places. It often perches on rocks and ledges, peeking out from crevices before exploring its surroundings. Its engaging behaviour adds plenty of character without requiring a large amount of swimming space.
In its natural habitat, the Tailspot Blenny feeds on algae, biofilm and tiny organisms found on rocky surfaces. In captivity, offer a varied diet that includes quality marine algae-based foods, spirulina, seaweed such as nori, and suitable frozen foods. Although it may graze on naturally occurring algae, it should not be relied upon as a solution for nuisance algae problems.
Generally peaceful and considered reef compatible, the Tailspot Blenny can usually be kept alongside suitable marine fish, corals and invertebrates. However, it may become territorial towards other blennies, particularly those with similar appearances, so keeping a single specimen is generally recommended.
For the best results, introduce your Tailspot Blenny to a mature aquarium with plenty of live rock, established grazing surfaces and good water quality. A secure lid is advisable, as blennies may jump when startled.
With its manageable size, attractive markings and lively personality, the Tailspot Blenny is a fantastic choice for aquarists looking to add a little character to a well-maintained marine reef aquarium.
