Fire Shrimp (Lysmata debelius) – Striking Beauty & Reef-Safe Functionality
The Fire Shrimp, also known as the Blood Red Shrimp or Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp, is a breathtaking addition to any marine aquarium. With its vivid red coloration, contrasting white antennae, and white spots across the body, this shrimp stands out as one of the most visually stunning invertebrates available to reef hobbyists.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, Fire Shrimps are not just admired for their beauty—they also serve a functional role in reef ecosystems. These shrimp are reef-safe, peaceful, and act as effective scavengers, feeding on leftover food, detritus, and parasites. They may even offer “cleaning services” to fish by removing dead tissue and external parasites from willing tank mates.
Although generally shy during daylight hours, Fire Shrimps become more active in the evening and are often seen hanging upside-down in rock crevices or shaded overhangs. They prefer low lighting and plenty of live rock to explore and hide in, especially when molting.
