Brown Scopas Tang –
The Brown Scopas Tang (Zebrasoma scopas), also known as the Two-Tone Tang or Brown Sailfin Tang, is an attractive and hardy marine fish that makes an excellent addition to a well-established saltwater aquarium. Its subtle brown, olive and yellow colouring, combined with delicate pale markings across its body, gives this species a distinctive appearance that becomes more noticeable under good aquarium lighting.
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Brown Scopas Tang inhabits coral reefs and lagoons, where it spends much of its day grazing on algae growing across rocks and reef surfaces. In the aquarium, its natural feeding behaviour makes it a useful algae grazer, helping to manage certain types of algae as part of a balanced aquarium maintenance routine.
The Brown Scopas Tang is an active swimmer and needs a spacious aquarium with plenty of open swimming room, mature live rock and hiding places. An aquarium of around 400–500 litres or larger is a sensible target, providing enough room for swimming and grazing as the fish matures. Good filtration, strong oxygenation and stable water parameters are essential for its long-term health.
A varied, algae-rich diet is particularly important for this species. Offer marine seaweed such as nori, spirulina-based foods and quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Suitable frozen marine foods can also be included for variety, but plant-based foods should form the foundation of its diet.
Generally considered reef safe, the Brown Scopas Tang can usually be kept alongside corals and many marine invertebrates. However, it may become territorial towards other tangs, especially those with similar body shapes or colouring. Careful tankmate selection and sufficient swimming space help reduce conflict.
With consistent care, nutritious feeding and excellent water quality, the Brown Scopas Tang is a rewarding choice for aquarists looking for an active, useful and characterful addition to their marine aquarium.
