Red Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica)

The Red Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica), also known as the Fire Goby or Fire Dartfish, is a beautiful and graceful marine fish admired for its striking red, orange, yellow and white colouration. Its slender body features a pale front section that transitions into a vivid red-orange rear, while its elongated dorsal fin gives it an elegant appearance. This colourful fish is a popular choice for peaceful marine and reef aquariums.

Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific, the Red Firefish is commonly found around coral reefs, where it hovers above the substrate and feeds on tiny planktonic organisms drifting in the water. In a home aquarium, it often swims gracefully in the current near its chosen hiding place, quickly darting into a crevice when startled. Providing plenty of caves, overhangs and secure hiding spots among live rock helps it feel safe and settle into its surroundings.

The Red Firefish is generally peaceful and well suited to community marine aquariums. It can be kept with a variety of calm reef fish, corals and ornamental invertebrates. However, it is naturally shy and may struggle when housed with aggressive, boisterous or highly competitive tank mates. It is usually best kept singly or as a compatible pair, as individuals may fight when kept together without sufficient space or an established bond.

A varied, nutritious diet is important for maintaining its health and vivid colouration. Offer small meaty foods such as frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp and suitable plankton-based preparations, alongside quality marine pellets or flakes that the fish readily accepts. Small, regular feedings are often more suitable than occasional large meals because of its natural plankton-feeding habits.

One essential requirement is a secure, tightly fitting aquarium lid. Red Firefish are well-known jumpers and may leap from an uncovered tank when frightened. Stable water conditions, a peaceful environment and accessible hiding places will help this elegant species thrive.

With its brilliant fiery colouration, gentle temperament and fascinating hovering behaviour, the Red Firefish is an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add colour and elegance to a peaceful marine aquarium.
