Six Line Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus hexataenia)
The Six Line Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus hexataenia), also known as the Sixstripe Wrasse or Pyjama Wrasse, is a colourful and energetic marine fish that brings vibrant colour and activity to a saltwater aquarium. Its distinctive body features six bright orange and yellow horizontal stripes running across a purple-blue background, complemented by a reddish face and striking markings near the tail. This attractive combination makes it a popular choice for marine and reef aquarium enthusiasts.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Six Line Wrasse inhabits coral reefs and rocky environments where it darts between crevices in search of small crustaceans and other tiny invertebrates. In the aquarium, it displays similar behaviour, constantly exploring live rock and investigating narrow gaps. Providing plenty of rockwork, caves and hiding places helps recreate its natural habitat and gives the fish opportunities to forage and retreat.
One of the benefits of keeping a Six Line Wrasse is its natural hunting behaviour. It may feed on unwanted small pests, including certain flatworms, bristleworms and parasitic snails. However, its appetite for small invertebrates means it may also consume beneficial microfauna and tiny ornamental shrimp, so it should not be regarded as a guaranteed pest-control solution.
The Six Line Wrasse is carnivorous and should receive a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped marine seafood and suitable high-quality marine pellets. Regular feeding supports its active lifestyle and helps maintain good body condition. A mature aquarium with established live rock provides additional natural foraging opportunities.
Although generally considered reef-safe with corals, the Six Line Wrasse can become territorial as it matures. It may harass other wrasses, small gobies, firefish and timid tankmates, particularly those introduced after it has established its territory. It is usually best kept as a single specimen and introduced towards the end of the aquarium’s stocking process. A secure aquarium lid is essential because this active fish can jump when startled.
With its brilliant stripes, constant movement and fascinating hunting behaviour, the Six Line Wrasse is a rewarding addition to a carefully planned marine aquarium.
