Orange Spot Goby (Valenciennea puellaris)
The Orange Spot Goby is an attractive marine aquarium fish, admired for its pale body, vibrant orange spots and distinctive blue facial markings. Also known as the Orange-Spotted Sleeper Goby, this fascinating species is popular with marine aquarists for its peaceful temperament and natural sand-sifting behaviour.
Orange Spot Goby Care Requirements
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Orange Spot Goby inhabits sandy lagoons and reef environments. In the aquarium, it needs a spacious, mature marine setup with a suitable bed of fine sand for sifting, burrowing and finding natural food.
A larger aquarium with plenty of floor space is recommended, with around 300 litres or more a sensible starting point for long-term care. Provide plenty of hiding places and ensure all live rock is securely positioned to prevent collapse if the fish digs underneath it. A tight-fitting aquarium lid is also essential, as gobies can jump.
Maintain stable water conditions, with a temperature of approximately 22–28°C, a salinity of 1.020–1.025 specific gravity and a pH of 8.1–8.4.
Feeding Your Orange Spot Goby
The Orange Spot Goby is a carnivore that naturally sifts through sand to find small invertebrates and other edible organisms. Supplement its natural foraging with meaty marine foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp and suitable sinking marine pellets. Feed regularly and monitor its body condition to help prevent malnutrition.
Compatibility and Behaviour
Generally peaceful, the Orange Spot Goby can be suitable for community marine and reef aquariums. It may share a burrow with a compatible pistol shrimp, creating an interesting natural partnership. Avoid aggressive tank mates and use caution when housing it with similar sand-sifting gobies.
Although generally reef compatible, its digging can disturb sand around low-lying corals.
Add an Orange Spot Goby to Your Aquarium
With its striking markings and engaging behaviour, the Orange Spot Goby is a rewarding addition to a suitable established marine aquarium. Provide a mature sand bed, consistent feeding and excellent water quality for the best results.
