Halloween Hermit Crabs – Colorful Clean-Up Crew with Personality

Add a splash of color and character to your saltwater aquarium with Halloween Hermit Crabs! Known for their striking orange and black legs, these nocturnal scavengers are not only eye-catching but also highly beneficial members of your clean-up crew.

Halloween Hermit Crabs are most active at night, exploring the tank in search of food. During the day, you’ll often find them tucked away in their shells, resting. Despite their occasional downtime, they are naturally curious and always on the move when hungry.

As omnivores, Halloween Hermit Crabs are incredibly easy to feed. They’ll happily munch on leftover food, detritus, dead organisms, green hair algae, and even cyanobacteria—helping to keep your tank clean and balanced. Their appetite for nuisance algae makes them a natural solution for unwanted growth in your aquarium.

However, like many hermits, they can become territorial over shells if resources are limited. To encourage peaceful cohabitation, ensure there are plenty of empty shells of varying sizes available. A well-fed crab is a happy crab—feed them once or twice a week with a variety of options such as raw shrimp, mysis shrimp, silversides, scallops, clams, mussels, and algae tablets. If your tank lacks natural algae, supplement their diet with algae wafers to prevent aggression.

Whether you’re a beginner or experienced aquarist, Halloween Hermit Crabs are a hardy, low-maintenance, and functional addition to any marine setup. They’re not just ornamental—they’re hard-working little janitors with flair!
