Chalk Goby – Marine Aquarium Fish and Care Guide

The Chalk Goby (Valenciennea sexguttata) is an attractive and hardworking marine fish, popular with marine aquarium enthusiasts for its peaceful nature and fascinating sand-sifting behaviour. Featuring a pale, chalky body with subtle markings and distinctive blue facial spots, this goby adds character to a marine aquarium while helping to turn over the sandy substrate.

Chalk Goby Care Requirements

Chalk Gobies require a mature marine aquarium with a deep bed of fine sand where they can sift through the substrate in search of small food organisms. A minimum aquarium size of approximately 200 litres is recommended, with larger tanks offering greater stability and more natural feeding opportunities.

Provide plenty of open sandy areas alongside live rock, caves and other suitable hiding places. A secure aquarium lid is advisable, as gobies can jump when startled. Maintain stable water conditions, with a temperature of 24–26°C, salinity around 1.025 specific gravity and a pH of 8.1–8.4.

Feeding Your Chalk Goby

Although Chalk Gobies naturally sift sand to find tiny invertebrates and other edible organisms, they may struggle to obtain sufficient nutrition from the substrate alone, particularly in newer aquariums. Offer a varied diet of small frozen foods, such as mysis shrimp and enriched brine shrimp, alongside suitable sinking marine foods. Feed regularly and monitor body condition to ensure your goby is eating well.

Compatibility and Behaviour

Chalk Gobies are generally peaceful and can be suitable for community marine aquariums and reef systems. They usually coexist well with other peaceful fish but may compete with similar sand-sifting gobies for territory and food. Their constant digging can move sand around the aquarium and occasionally undermine unsecured rockwork, so ensure rocks are firmly supported.

Buy a Chalk Goby for Your Marine Aquarium

With its attractive appearance, peaceful temperament and natural sand-sifting behaviour, the Chalk Goby is an excellent choice for suitable established marine aquariums. Provide a sandy substrate, appropriate tank mates, stable water quality and a dependable feeding routine to help your Chalk Goby thrive.
