Purple Tang – Care Guide and Marine Aquarium Fish
The Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum) is a stunning and highly sought-after marine fish, prized for its vibrant purple body, bright yellow tail and distinctive appearance. Originating from the Red Sea and surrounding regions, this beautiful tang makes an impressive addition to a suitable marine aquarium and is particularly popular with experienced reef keepers.
Purple Tang Care Requirements
Purple Tangs require a spacious, well-established marine aquarium with excellent water quality and plenty of swimming space. Due to their active nature and territorial behaviour, a tank of at least 400 litres is recommended, with larger aquariums preferred for long-term success. Provide plenty of live rock and hiding places while maintaining open areas for swimming.
Maintain a stable water temperature of approximately 24–26°C, a salinity of around 1.025 specific gravity and a pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Consistent filtration, good water circulation and regular water changes are essential to keep your Purple Tang healthy.
Feeding Your Purple Tang
Purple Tangs are primarily herbivorous grazers and need a varied, vegetable-rich diet. Offer high-quality marine algae, nori seaweed, spirulina-based foods and suitable herbivore pellets. Supplement their diet with occasional frozen foods to provide variety and help maintain their condition. Feeding small portions several times a day can support healthy growth and natural grazing behaviour.
Compatibility and Behaviour
Although generally hardy once established, Purple Tangs can be territorial, particularly towards other tangs and similarly shaped fish. Introduce tank mates carefully and avoid overcrowding. They can be suitable for reef aquariums and will generally leave corals and invertebrates alone, making them an attractive choice for many reef setups.
